MONDAY MIND DUMP

Welcome back to me and you!  I've had an extended absence from blogging (since Christmas Eve) while I enjoyed time with the family, including my mom and uncle - whom many of you met on Sunday. Thanks so much to all who made them feel welcome.  I trust that all who read this were able to spend at least some time with those closest to them.  There is no doubt that as close as my immediate family is, we feel that closeness with each and every one of you who together with us have become part of the Crossroads family.  I look forward to those relationships continuing to grow in the year to come.

Sunday's service was a joy in so many ways - here's a few quick takes:
  1. Really great to look back on all that God has done at Crossroads, but not just for an organization, or a meeting space - for the PEOPLE of Crossroads.  It was fun putting together the retrospective video of series roll-in's from 2008. My goal for 2009's last service?  For our video retrospective to be filled not with series and messages, but with people and their experiences.  My big take-away from 2008 is not how clever all of us are at wrapping up the gospel into 30-minute packages replete with video illustrations, cool graphics and sticky statements.  My big-takeaway isn't how cool the vibe is in the cinema, or how great the music is, or how wonderful the lobby experience is - though ALL of those things are true. My BIG take-away from 2008 is how God changed people's lives, and how He allowed us all to be a part of it.
  2. Number one was very long, so I'm skipping number two.
  3. So challenging to look ahead to the new year, but we look ahead in confidence seeing how God has equipped us, and comfortable with the plans and direction laid out before us. Focus for 2009?  That's easy, it's THREE things:  Connections, connections, connections.  Connections between us and God, connections between us and each other, and connections between us and the community around us.
  4. I appreciate so much those who put their back into the ministry every week setting up the sanctuary, the lobby, and the children's environments.  Crossroads would not exist without you.
  5. I SO appreciate our crack technical team who SOMEHOW - though restricted by budgetary constraints to the use of "somewhat less than state-of-the-art equipment" in combination with duct tape, bailing wire, and prayer - manage (just before vomiting) to provide an electronic delivery system for the presentation of the gospel EVERY SINGLE WEEK WITHOUT FAIL!  We owe you guys all the respect and admiration possible for your faithful service and willingness to keep coming back!  The church will begin paying for your Tums in 2009.  Thank you Will, Natalie, Max and Justin.  Now, someone get a cool cloth for Natalie's forehead.
  6. Thank you to my wife, Leslie - your Community Groups Pastor, Bookkeeper, Accountant, Lead-Pastor-Keeper-Aliver, family raiser, church mom - and my personal everything - for your love for me and the kids, your love for God and His vision for Crossroads, and your patience and guidance as we figure out a day, a week, a month, a year at a time how to plant a church in Enterprise.  (Keep it up and maybe we'll name a countertop after you or something.  Oh thank God for heavenly rewards!).  Love you.
  7. Worship was fantastic Sunday. I'm not talking about perfect execution, or unbelievable musicianship, or tight beginnings, endings and transitions - I'm talking about the HEART of the worship experience.  Janna really brought it Sunday and it came from deep within, and I jumped and celebrated and danced around and cried all the way through At The Cross, like a small child (but in joy and humble gratitude).  Keep it up, yo.
  8. Somehow, in all my coaching and mentoring and book-reading and networking, NO ONE I KNOW suggested to me that we might take the Sunday after Christmas OFF (though MANY of them do) - to celebrate our hard-working volunteers and allow people a bit more time with their families, a small vacation, and a bit of time to recover from the financial drain of Christmas.  Oops.  Look for it next year.  Sounds like a GREAT way to love God and love other people.
  9. Okay, I've already forgotten seven other things I wanted to write about, and at the risk of making someone mad because I forgot to personally thank them (you KNOW I love you), and because this post is getting quite long...I'm stopping.
Love you guys SO MUCH!  Don't forget about the GRAND Re-Opening of THE GARAGE on New Year's Eve from 9PM to Midnight.  If you are a responsible adult (or you play one on television - or stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night), Pastor Ben and Kelly Rice could REALLY use your help herding young people. Come and enjoy the evening, the new space, the fellowship and the opportunity to be around about 100 teenagers to ring in the New Year.  It's going to be one for the books!  Have a great week!

'Twas the Night before Christmas...

And not an elf in sight.  Wishing (and praying) all of you have the very best Christmas ever!  I know this time of year can be hard.  It is different for us this year.  Everyone has seen their fair share of challenges.  But with all we have all been through, what an awesome opportunity we have to really keep Christ at the center of our Christmas.

God bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you and give you peace.

All our love,

Gene & Leslie

MONDAY MIND DUMP (ELF-FREE)

Well here it is Monday night at 11PM and I am STILL wrestling with getting the Great Elf Caper video uploaded.  I've resized, retooled, rewound, restarted, and I just ain't gettin' no RESPECT (technologically speaking).  I have NEVER had this problem before.  I'm sure it's elf- related.  So while my upload on Vimeo is still hovering at 5%, and before I go BACK to youtube to try uploading there again, let me give you a few quick hits from the weekend and hopefully we'll get the Not-Ready-For-Prime Time (or profit) Players version of the Xroads Xmas Elves.
  1. So encouraged by GREAT attendance through the holidays!  Fantastic turn-out the Sunday before Christmas. Saw a Blog post from the pastor of Mars Hill Church bemoaning the fact that at their first service Sunday morning only 80 people were in attendance...in a building that seats 1300!  Wow, Roadies Rule!
  2. The service itself was a reflection of all who put their time in during the week to make it special.  Thanks to all the musicians and elf-people who gave time during the week so we could all have a great time Sunday.
  3. Worship was fantastic Sunday morning!  I jumped up and down and rocked and danced like an idiot during "All Your Promises", and I wept like a small child during "All Over". What a privilege to get to worship with all of you!
  4. Great to have all the kids in the service Sunday!
  5. Great to have Matt Mendenhall home for the holidays!
  6. The set pieces and trees and the way the projector was reformatted looked just great.
  7. TONS (again) of first-time visitors!  Awesome.  We are a very visited church.  If everyone who regularly attends Crossroads (one out of three weeks) shows up on the same week, we'll be full in the main sanctuary!  Bring it!
  8. My Vimeo upload is now at 14% and hasn't stalled yet.  Hmm...
  9. Sunday Night Open House at the Annex was fantastic and HUGELY attended!
  10. Big pastor love to Star and Greg and Becky and Nat and Leslie and EVERYONE who pitched in to get it all set up and brought cookies and treats and those little sausage and meatball things and cider and such!  EXCELLENT Crossroads hang time!  Very cool.
Thank you to all who gave cards and treats and gifts to me and Leslie, and thank you for all you've done for our family!  So much more to say, and i know I'm leaving out important stuff, and great things that happened, and people I should thank and I'm sorry if I forgot things that I should have remembered to say.  Have a SAFE and fun and peaceful week this week!

(And I'll get this @#$%^&*! Elf video uploaded and posted if I have to...whatever!  It is too, too funny...)

GREAT MOMENTS

After I read this story by Kent Nerburn posted on Hal Mayer's Blog I did what any person of great integrity would do. I stole it, so I could pass it on to you. Thank you Kent Nerburn and thanks Hal for posting it! Really good stuff here (get a tissue out).

The Cab Ride I’ll Never Forget

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. One time I arrived in the middle of the night for a pick up at a building that was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. But I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself.

So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80’s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.”

I looked in the rear view mirror. Her eyes were glistening.

“I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

“How much do I owe you?” she asked, reaching into her purse.

“Nothing,” I said.

“You have to make a living,” she answered.

“There are other passengers.”

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

“You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you.”

I squeezed her hand, then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done anything more important in my life. We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware—beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

Some Cool Stuff God Did

He made fish,
So we could have fish tacos.

He made sunshine,
So we could wear sunglasses.

He made mountains,
So we can climb.

He made us,
So we can have someone to love.

He made the brains in the guys who understood the chemistry necessary to invent plastic,
So we could have white, artificial, pre-lit Christmas trees.

He made Crossroads,
So we could have someplace to put them.

Cool, huh?

MONDAY MIND DUMP

Week Two of our December series 'JOY' was kickin'!  Had the traditional technical glitches, but things smoothed out quickly and some BIG THINGS happened today.  Some quick takes:
  1. Two people made first-time decisions to trust their lives to Christ, and six people re-dedicated their lives this morning.  (NOTE: That number is based on communication cards turned in).
  2. TONS of first time visitors today (in what is becoming a pretty common sight at Crossroads - and we're so grateful for it)!
  3. New volunteers in just about every area are really making things work.  So many fresh faces coming alongside long-time Roadies to get the job done.  Thank you!
  4. Attendance is staying STRONG through the holidays as well as giving!
  5. Remember that turning point we talked about seven weeks ago, when we said, "There's a whole new vibe in the sanctuary"?  Guess what?  It wasn't temporary.  We've caught a wave here.  Hang ten and dig it!
  6. So great to hear about Crossroads family getting together throughout the week and helping each other out.  That's what it's all about.
  7. We had a lot of regulars out that carry a big weight on Sunday.  Lot of folks under the weather.  Two things: 1. Thank you to all who stepped up and made Sunday special, and 2. Pray for God's healing on those in our church who are fighting off the crud!
  8. MATT MENDENHALL IS COMING HOME TUESDAY!
  9. The spontaneous Crossroads Touch Football League was able to add girls to the on-field action when the spontaneous Crossroads Touch Football League, became the spontaneous Crossroads FLAG Football League on Sunday afternoon (think about it). Thanks to those who brought the flags!
  10. In a display of awesome generosity - seperate and apart from your regular giving  - a special offering of $640 was received for Dothan Police Officer Damon Woodham, whose house burned down last week.  That's Roadies being blessed to be a blessing!  I am so honored to get to pastor this church!  So proud of all of you and blown away at how you all responded.  Way to represent Christ!
  11. Great Staff and Leaders meeting tonight!  So excited about the year ahead.  Much more to come on that.
Thank you for all who work so hard to make the Crossroads experience unique and special for all who attend.  If you're just getting started at Crossroads, I encourage you to bring your talents and abilities and plug in as we celebrate the goodness of God, and reach our community for Christ!  Have a great Monday!

The Dog House

Funny vid (actual commercial for JC Penny) heisted from Michael McMinn's Blog (thanks Michael). Married guys, take care when purchasing your wife's Christmas present this year, or this could happen to you...

Equal Time

While I don't apologize for posting pics of me on my own Blog, I just noticed that the last two posts I made have pictures of me in them, and that was not really what I'm going for.  I'd rather have pictures of you.  Send me one, and if it is unique, different, or bizarre (easy with that one) or just a good pic, I'll work it in.  It's fun.

Here's a great shot by Max of Janna and her brother Jonathan on the last day of the Blessed Life series.

Small...and apparently confused.

Good to get away on a working break.  Great to spend 36 hours with Leslie!  Coaching network in Ocala was fantastic as usual.  I appreciate everything that has been poured into me and Crossroads through the NEXT Initiative and the coaching networks.  You know, here's my coach, Ron Sylvia, pastoring a church of 3000 people, prepping and speaking four times each weekend, writing an implementation plan for launching coaching networks throughout the US,  getting ready to break ground on a new 67 acre campus, having radiation treatments twice each day for a brain tumor, and still taking time to listen to a room full of whiney pastors tell him how tough their life is.  How does that even happen?  I'm confused by that.

Ron's determination is inspiring.  And God's accomplishments through him make me feel very small indeed.  Thanks for leading with clarity, and leaning into The Dip, Ron.  Your stupid brain tumor doesn't stand a chance.

Some Assembly Required

With apologies to Will Lurie, Crossroads media arts pastor, I have a real poor quality Youtube vid (taken from some real high quality HD vid of the service - gotta hate what youtube does to your vids, but the file was too big and it wouldn't upload on vimeo)...ANYWAY...

This is the Chinese Translations segment from our Sunday service.

enJOY! (see you when we get back from Ocala)

MONDAY MIND DUMP

Hey guys, a quick update before Leslie and I head down to Ocala for our Next Level Leadership coaching network. (Ocala, that's uncomfortably close to the town where that one football team comes from, isn't it?)  It matters not, if Alabama losing to Florida is the worst thing that happened on Saturday, December 6th, then we are some fortunate and blessed people!  (Although I AM taking the opportunity to ramble a bit, just to push the whole Hal Mayer Gator post thing further down the page on my Blog!

What a FANTASTIC service we enjoyed at Crossroads on Sunday!  It is such a privilege and an honor to get to serve there with all of you.  I am continually blown away at God's grace and goodness to us, and Sunday was just another example of how great He is!  Some quick take-away's from the day:
  1. Started our new Christmas series called "JOY".  After five weeks of intense (and longer) services covering some pretty important Biblical ground - it was fun to kick it back a bit and ease our way into the Christmas holiday.
  2. Tons of new faces at Crossroads as we enjoyed our SECOND BIGGEST CROWD EVER! (Just seems to keep growing, huh?)
  3. Had TONS of laughs in the first ten minutes of the service.  The whole Chinese instructions thing was a lot of fun!
  4. The old movie theatre sanctuary looked unbelievably festive, the stage festooned (one of my favorite words) with a half-dozen white trees with multi-colored lights!  Thanks to all who braved near-certain electrocution to get it all set up.
  5. Lobby was ROCKING this morning!
  6. Worship solid as always - we are SO FORTUNATE to have these people doing what God put in them right here at Crossroads.
  7. Great new decorations up in Pre-School and Nursery - thank you Peggy Eshelman!
  8. Many, many people made a decision to rededicate their lives to Christ this morning (that's actually #1 on the list - 'cause it's why we're here).
  9. AWESOME (first use of that word in several Blog posts) time playing touch football with a crew of Roadies and a bunch of new faces.  It was great.  Is ANYONE tougher than Ethan Mendenhall?  BTW, the Lord spoke to me this afternoon to let me know that J.D. should henceforth-eth, ONLY play on the lead pastor's team. Ha, ha!
  10. What a wonderful day from start to finish.  My only regret is that we have to wait seven more days before we get to do it again!
May your JOY be complete, and may your entire week be filled with gratitude as you marvel at the goodness of God and how MUCH He loves us all!

Hal Mayer: Paid In Full

All hail Tim Tebow (even though I can't stand him). The Gators are the best team on the planet (even though I reeeeeeeally hate 'em good).

Hal Mayer is very smart and talented and is always right.

FIRDAY FUNNIES

If it wasn't for Dave Anderson, pastor of Crosspoint in Decatur, I wouldn't have much of a blog. They've been around for 6 years, and started doing movie theatre church a year before we even thought about it.  Great resources. I know good funny video when I steal it...off his Blog.

The first one is a teaser they produced for a series last month about the Bible called 'txt'.
It's fantastic.  They always have GREAT video!

This next video had me on the floor.  Mom's will especially appreciate it.  Done by Northland Church in Longview, Florida.  Great stuff.

JOY in DECEMBER

All month long we'll be doing a great new series called joy.  Lots of laughs, good times, uplifting message of hope.  Check out the roll-in for the series.

Hang On a Minute...

Hey guys, check back here tonight before you check out.  I have been swamped with a huge project that just got finished and I'm getting a mailer for this weekend out right now.  But I will have a cool Blog post later tonight.  Trust me.  I'll tweet when it's up.

Have a great day!

Freak

Okay, I might as well admit it. I think I might be some freak of nature like Quasimodo or something.  Maybe I'm like the Christian equivalent of high-octane (yet at times just as mumbly and forgetful) Ozzie (not of Ozzie & Harriet...the other Ozzie) as I stay awake for hours on end working on stuff - stuff - stuff, and prowling back and forth on the small rug in my 2nd floor office like some kind of caged animal, ruminating on ideas and concepts for several projects at once, slamming down in the seat in front of my computer to write, or scrawling lengthy paragraphs on multiple yellow pads, or (my personal favorite) making connections between talking points like a flow chart on the back of a piece of cardboard and then turning them into multi-colored hieroglyphic treasure maps using...PowerPoint.  You know, to preach from. Riiiiiiiight. ("Sahnctuary...Saaaahnc-tuary!")

Dudes, I go through cycles like this where I work...all the time.  I don't "do" vacations, or take days off anyway. Occasionally, me and Leslie steal away for a few wonderful hours, but we generally keep grinding away at the task at hand.  Honestly, it has nothing to do with the fact that I pastor Crossroads.  It's just the way I'm wired.  I don't know how to do it any differently.  And sometimes it sucks. 'Cause it'll be like...oh, I dont' know, let's see...1:42 in the morning and I was going to go to bed so I could read for an hour, before I get up at six-thirty or so but I remembered that I didn't Blog today. This is really retarded isn't it?  (I know, you're not supposed to use that word like that.  No offense, okay?)

So, some genius re-tooled the way biblegateway.com looks (and works).  Probably to make it "better", right?  But after some manipulation, here's hope:

Lazy people are soon poor, hard workers get rich. Proverbs 10:4
Wise words bring many benefits, and hard work brings rewards. Proverbs 12:14
Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and become a slave. Proverbs 12:24

And I get all stoked on those and a dozen other scriptures like them, and then I read:

It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.  Psalms 127:2

Thank you, Lord.  Goodnight.

Great Bible Success Stories

You know, at times when the going gets tough, we all get tempted to go, "Poor me".  I've done it countless times. Thinking, "Hey, I'm a Christ-follower.  I'm really serving you God.  Shouldn't I get a cookie, or a merit badge, or some kind of spiritual respect for my contribution to Your overall greatness...God?"

Having said that, I had a great, productive day, but I was just reading something that reminded me that not every day feels (or goes) that way.  And we can get down sometimes thinking that maybe we got sent to the end of the line where the "good stuff" gets passed out.  Ever felt that way?  Feel that way now?  It happens to all of us.

Check this out.  It'll blow you up a little bit.  It did me.  God is so cool, I mean, really.  All you leader-types who are wrestling with God's call on your life and wondering what it may cost to really serve Him (don't let your spouses read this, Ha-ha-ha!).  We are in good company, ya'll.  I lifted it from an article by Matt Chandler.  Listen to how he characterizes the "great success" of some well-known folks we read about in the Bible:
  • Moses spends his whole life with grumbling whiners and dies without getting to walk into the promised land.
  • Samson suicide bombs the Philistines and when the dust settles, he is dead, and the Philistines are still in power.
  • Jeremiah ends up in exile, with the rest of the country, after being beaten repeatedly for telling people what God told him to say.
  • John the Baptist is beheaded by a pervert who gives his head to a 15 year-old stripper.
  • Peter is crucified upside-down.
  • Paul is killed in Rome, after spending his life seeing people destroying what he built, all the while (among other things) being lost at sea, beaten, rejected, stoned, and left for dead.
If our hope is set on anything other than God, how do we survive when things go bad?  If He is the goal, the treasure, the pursuit, then can we allow life-challenges, and life-speedbumps, and even life-head-on collisions to fuel our passion to press into the goodness of God and His awesome grace?  We don't like it when things don't go our way, but isn't our faith is sustained when trials push us closer to God?  What do you say?

Sound off.  What do you do, when life comes at you too fast?  What do you do when you are challenged beyond anything you thought you were prepared for?  What keeps you going when nothing is going your way?  What do YOU do?

MONDAY MIND DUMP

I trust that everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend and had someplace to go (or someplace to avoid) on Thursday.  We had a good crowd that included Leslie's parents from Colorado...or California...or Texas...or Florida...or Canada (they spend half the year in a motor home, not sure where they're from). Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful no doubt and, as many have commented on last weeks Blog posts, we all have much to be thankful for.  (I am going to go out on a limb here and say I think God would be tickled if we remained thankful throughout the entire year and so I will endeavor to do so).  Some quick hits from the weekend:
  1. FANTASTIC TURNOUT for the Sunday after a big holiday!  I was impressed.  I thought we'd get killed on attendance, but attendance was SOLID!  Hats off to everyone who made the trip!
  2. Worship was great, band sounded great (Leslie's mom said, "It was a little loud", but that's what Mom's are supposed to say, right?), and hats off to everyone for pulling off the "Jonathan Cutrell is in the house" caper.  Having him on stage was just awesome. What are you doing the rest of the year Jonathan?
  3. Great to conclude series, The Blessed Life.  It was a real important series for our community and a turning point for many individuals, and for Crossroads as a church.
  4. Despite all the dire warnings from the church planting intelligentsia, November was the best month we have had since we opened with regards to attendance and offerings! It was also the BIGGEST month for readership of this Blog (1000 visits!).  Thank you God!
  5. Alabama made up for 6 years of SEC futility and kicked the crap out of Auburn to go 12-0 on the season.  (Though some might argue that Auburn had very little crap left in 'em, when they showed up in Tuscaloosa). At any rate, Roll Tide!
  6. I am really excited for the month of December at Crossroads.  Excited to decorate the Cinema for Christmas and to start our new series, JOY!
  7. Kudos again to our awesome set-up team, who get the job done regardless of who shows up, or how many show up!  You guys rock!
  8. We have the best ministry for kids ever and I am so happy to part of a church that values children and cares about children's ministry!
Many, many more thanks for a great weekend go out to all who labor to make Crossroads a place where people can come and connect with God and each other!

Have a great Monday!  Go out and serve BIG in your world this week!
